ROBSTOWN - A man caught stealing copies of the Nueces County Record Star newspaper tells Robstown police he was hired to do it.

He also said, the person who hired him is a relative of Jose Saenz, a Robstown man indicted on drug charges yesterday.

Police say 43 -year old Victor Valdez, is the man behind the series of bizarre robberies.

CORPUS CHRISTI - Derek Cook calls Oklahoma home, but this weekend he will be in town helping out at Monster Jam. He was originally scheduled to headline their FMX event, but broke his wrist this past weekend at a competition.

His injury required surgery, marking Cook's eighth total surgery from a motor cross related accident.

An early birthday celebration was held for Gertie King Friday in the lobby of the Fairway Apartments.

She has her own apartment there although several caregivers including a niece check on her daily.

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Corpus Christi police are looking for someone who stole a woman's purse, then used her credit card at several local stores.

It happened Saturday, July 24 around 5:00 p.m., according to police.

CORPUS CHRISTI - Investigators believe an overnight fire in a vacant house on the westside may have been started accidentally.

The fire at the corner of Tyler Avenue and Blevins Street was reported around 3:30 this morning. When fire crews arrived flames and thick smoke were pouring out of the house, which was pretty much destroyed by the time the flames were doused.

CORPUS CHRISTI - A 20-year old man has some cuts and bruises after his S.U.V. rolled over on South Padre Island Drive.

According to police, he was driving down the freeway near the Crosstown Exchange around 2:45 this afternoon when the vehicles in front of him began to slow down.

CALIFORNIA - Firefighters are moving fast this morning to get ahead of a wildfire near Palmdale, California.

The blaze has already destroyed three homes, but has hundreds more within its striking distance.

CORPUS CHRISTI- The Texas Education Agency released its school accountability ratings for 2010 and overall the news appears to be good for area school districts.

The TEA gave the Corpus Cchristi Independent School District an overall rating of "Academically Acceptable".

18 CCISD campuses were rated "Exemplary" compared to 14 in 2009.

There was some bad news for the district also, Miller high school was given an "Academically Unacceptable" rating.
