Posted 03/10/2010 1:53 AM

Another snowy day was expected over the central part of the country Wednesday as two low pressure systems were forecast to combine over the Plains.

A system that brought snow and rain to the Northern and Central High Plains would slowly move toward the Great Lakes. Nathaniel Brown was days away from losing his job when he opened fire with two handguns early Tuesday in a maintenance building at the nation's largest university, police said. No students were hurt.

Behind the scenes, crafting the US no-fly list

Posted 03/10/2010 2:05 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) It starts with a tip, a scrap of intelligence, a fingerprint lifted from a suspected terrorist's home.

It ends when a person is forbidden to board an airplane a decision that's in the hands of about six experts from the Transportation Security Administration.

The no-fly list they oversee constantly changes as hundreds of analysts churn through a steady stream of intelligence. Managing the list is a high-stakes process. Go too… Click to Read More

Meatpackers say inspection cuts are shortsighted

Posted 03/10/2010 12:34 AM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indiana's plan to lay off some meat inspectors to save money and reduce the time inspectors spend with small, independent processors has the industry and farmers fearing it could hurt what has been a growing industry.

It's not clear how many of the state's 52 inspectors will be let go, but meatpackers say any layoffs will prevent them from growing to meet demand for locally raised meat. And, if state inspectors are scarce or unavailable, small meatp… Click to Read More
